Master shaped skis with this one easy lesson

by John Mukavitz

The shaped ski has revolutionized the ski industry. Not only do the skis make it easy to turn, but they make you look like a hero on the slopes. Just remember the 5 following pointers.

  1. Keep both lower legs and feet parallel
  2. Make both skis turn together with 8to 10 inches between the skis.
  3. Look back up the hill to see if your skis are leaving 2 distinct lines in the snow. (just to check, not in actual ski technique)
  4. Stay in a lower position and let the skis cross under your body. (in between the turn your knees will be up in your chest)
  5. Keep the upper body somewhat squared to the ski direction and for God's sake, keep your hands out in front!
The new shaped skis are all about riding the ski. Let the ski do the work. Don't fall into the old school shuss type of turn where you skid the skis. If you want to turn more, pressure the front of the boot more and the ski will bend and make a tighter turn. Don't misunderstand--there will still be times when you need to skid your skis, but the best of skiers are never caught making skidded turns on the easy groomed runs. Do yourself a favor and ski like a pro!
